Down 5-1 to the Blue Jays, the Red Sox were on the verge of losing,
but they turned it around for the 23rd time this season and got a
come-back walk-off 6 to 5 victory.
It began in the bottom of the sixth inning when Hunter Renfroe
singled to center to knock in Alex Verdugo from third. Two batters
later, with the bases loaded, Marwin Gonzalez drew a walk that
allowed Renfroe to jog in from third.
Blue Jays reliever, Tyler Chatwood next uncorked a wild pitch that
allowed Christian Vazquez to score from third, and just like that,
the Sox were only down 5-4 with three more innings to play. After a
scoreless seventh inning, Christian Arroyo bombed a homer over the
wall, for the second night in a row, and the game was tied in the
eighth inning.
Garrett Whitlock got out of some trouble in the ninth inning. An
error, a base hit and an intentional pass loading the bases full of
Blue Jays. But Whitlock got out of the jam by getting Riley Adams to
ground out and end the threat.
Then in the Sox half of the ninth, Kike Hernandez appeared to hit
into an easy ground out to start the inning. However, Blue Jays
shortstop, Bo Bichete's throw was off line causing Lourdes Gurriel to
come off the bag and lose the ball. Hernandez was able to scoot down
to second and Danny Santana came in to run for him. That
brought up Alex Verdugo, who took a shot toward the opposite field
that clanged off the wall, and Santana waltzed home with the game
winner. |
