Rafael Devers banged a line drive off the left field wall in the
bottom of the ninth inning, after Vlad Guerrero Jr homered to tie the
game in the top of the ninth with two outs, giving the Red Sox a
walk-off 2 to 1 victory.
Matt Barnes was two strikes away from finishing off a combined three
hit shutout of Toronto, when Guerrero homered to tie things up, 1-1.
But Alex Verdugo and J.D. Martinez singled off Rafael Dolis to lead
off the bottom of the ninth and one out later, Devers singled of the
wall in left center, to bring home Verdugo with the winning run.
Nathan Eovaldi provided a much needed strong performance, tossing 6
2/3 innings of scoreless, three-hit ball. He threw 81 pitches (55
strikes) and glided through the first six innings with ease, allowing
two baserunners in the fourth and nothing more.
Then in the seventh, with the Sox leading 1-0, he gave up two base
hits, and coaxed a routine doubleplay ball. With a left-hander up
next, Josh Taylor was brought in and fanned Rowdy Tellez, stranding
the tying run on third.
Verdugo drove in the first Sox run, after Marwin Gonzalez singled in
the third inning. Kike Hernandez replaced him on a fielder's choice.
Then Verdugo's line drive hit the top of the scoreboard in left,
buying enough time for Kike to race all the way around from first. |
