The Sox comeback with a five-run eighth inning,
after being no-hit for seven innings

Hitless
through seven innings, the Red Sox punched back and flattened the New
York Yankees with a furious five-run rally in the bottom of the
eighth inning and won the thriller, 5 to 4.
The Sox were down 4-0, and
didn't have a hit of Yankees starter Domingo German thru seven
innings. Then, out of nowhere, came a five hit, five run surge.
To open the inning, Alex Verdugo
hammered a 1-1 curveball from German for a double off the Sox bullpen
in right-center. Hunter Renfroe continued with a double into the left
field corner as Verdugo roared home with the Sox first run of the
game. Yankees reliever Jonathan Loaisiga entered, and Christian
Vazquez dumped a bloop single into right field that brought Renfroe
home. Franchy Cordero followed with a single up the middle and Kiki
Hernandez drove a double into the left field corner that brought home
another run. Now it was up to pinch-hitter Kevin Plawecki against
Zach Britton out of the Yanks bullpen. He chipped a grounder to short
that allowed Cordero to score the tying run and moved Hernandez to
third. Xander Bogaerts lofted a fly ball to right and Kiki sprinted
home with the go-ahead run, 5 to 4.
Matt Barnes closed the door in
the Yankees ninth to end a memorable comeback Sox win. It was the
32nd come-from-behind win of the season for the Red Sox, 11 of which,
came with them trailing after five innings. |
