Hunter Renfroe hit a go-ahead, two run homer with two outs in
the eighth inning, to lead the Red Sox to a 2-1 victory over the
Tampa Bay Rays. Renfroe smashed his 27th homer
after the Sox had fallen behind 1-0, in what was a scoreless tie
through seven innings.
Nelson Cruz had driven in the first run for the Rays with a single up
the middle in the eighth inning, driving in Brandon Lowe after he
reached on a two-out single.
A
half-inning later, Renfroe then threw out Joey
Wendle trying to take third after smashing a double
that got by the dive of centerfielder Danny
Santana. Renfroe tracked down the ball and then
nailed Wendle with a one hop strike to third base,
ending the game.
Renfroe had already thrown out
Manuel Margot for the last out in the fourth inning, when he tried for second on
a base hit into the right field corner. His MLB-leading outfield assist total
reached 16 for the season, putting him ahead of Dwight Evans in the Sox record
book for rightfielders.
Nathan Eovaldi pitched seven strong
shut-out innings, striking out eight, allowing just three scattered hits. |
