Martinez blasted a tie-breaking three-run homer and the Red Sox
backed Tanner Houck's clutch relief effort with a franchise
postseason record five home runs, beating the Rays, 14-6.
Kike Hernandez had five
of the sox' 20 hits, including a homer and three doubles, becoming
the first Red Sox player to bang out four extra base hits in a
postseason game and the sixth in MLB history.
The Sox scored two runs
in the first inning, but Chris Sale gave up a grandslam to Jordan
Luplow, that put the Sox in a 5-2 hole, in their half of the inning.
The Sox followed up by slugging five homers, on 20 hits, while Houck
retired 11 straight batters after replacing Sale. He allowed just one
run and no walks in five innings of relief.
The Sox chipped away at
the Rays' first inning lead, making the score 5-4 in the third
inning, when Xander Bogaerts and Alex Verdugo blasted back-to-back
homers. They scored four more two innings later with homers from J.D.
Martinez and Hernandez.
Rafael Devers also
homered and Christian Vazquez reached base three times. The Sox
became the first team to have six players with two RBIs in a
postseason game. |
