ALCS, GAME #1
The Rays and Arozarena run over the Sox
October 7, 2021 ...
Eduardo Rodriguez left the A.L. Divisional Series opener after just
1.2 innings, throwing 41 pitches, only 24 of which were strikes and
gave up all the offense the Tampa Bay Rays needed in a 5-0 defeat.
After a leadoff walk to
Randy Arozarena, Wander Franco doubled to deep center, long enough
for Arozarena to score all the way from first. Yandy Diaz scored
Franco with an infield hit and the Rays were up, 2-0. Rodriguez gave
way to Garrett Richards, who got the final out.
Nick Pivetta allowed
three more runs in five relief innings, but the Sox bats couldn't get
them back into the game. They finished the night with nine singles and
eight men left on base.
Shane McClanahan shut
out the Sox for five innings, allowing five hits and no free passes.
The Rays bullpen combined to shut down the Sox for the next four
innings.
Meanwhile Arozarena
became the first player in playoff history to steal home and hit a
home run in the same game. He stole home against Josh Taylor after
drawing a walk in the seventh inning. He easily beat the throw home
with a head-first slide.
