HOT AND COLD AND
HOT AND OUT ...
2021
ALDS, GAME #4
The Sox eliminate the Rays
and move on
October 11, 2021 ...
The Red Sox moved on to the American League Championship Series when,
with the score tied
in the bottom of the
ninth, with runners on second and third, Kike Hernandez lofted a fly
to center that was deep enough to score pinch runner, Danny Santana
from third, to win the game 6 to 5.
Christian Vazquez got
the winning run on base by smacking a single to left. Christian
Arroyo bunted him over to second, and pinch-hitter Travis Shaw
reached on an infield hit, moving him over to third and Santana came
in to run.
The Sox had busted out
to a 5-0 lead with a five-run third inning. Rafael Devers belted a
three-run homer after Vazquez singled and Kyle Schwarber walked. Alex
Verdugo doubled home Xander Bogaerts who had reached on another hit
and J.D. Martinez scored Verdugo with a single to left.
But the Rays chipped
away in the fifth inning by scoring a run when Jordan Luplow doubled,
moved to third on a fly ball and scored on a ground out. Then Wander
Franco homered with a man on in the sixth, to make the score, 5 to 3.
They caught up in the eighth on back-to-back doubles by Mike Zunino
and Kevin Kiermaier, followed by a single from Randy Arozarena off
Ryan Brasier, with nobody out. But Garrett Whitlock came in and shut
the door by getting the next three batters out.
Eduardo Rodriguez
started the game for the Sox and had a strong bounce-back effort,
allowing two runs on three hits in the first five innings. |
