Alex Verdugo's clutch hit ties the game
and then hits another to win the game
July 9, 2022 ...
The Red Sox earned a walk-off win in extra innings against the New
York Yankees, securing a 6 to 5 result. Alex Verdugo was the one who
came through for the Sox. He stroked an RBI single in the eighth
inning that tied the game at 3-3, and followed it up with an 2-RBI
single to win the game in the 10th inning.
The Sox were the first to score in the 2nd inning. With Xander
Bogaerts on second, Bobby Dalbec brought him home with a single to
center. Aaron Hicks' home run in the 5th inning tied the game.
The Yankees got two runs in the sixth inning to go up 3 to 1, on two
singles and a double by Anthony Rizzo. Rob Refsnyder homered in the
Sox half of the sixth to cut the lead to one run.
Then in the eighth inning, down 3-2, J.D. Martinez doubled to center
with two outs. Jeter Downs came in to run for him, and after Xander
Bogaerts drew a free pass, Verdugo singled through the infield to
left, scoring Downs with the tying the game at three apiece.
In the 10th inning, Aaron Judge doubled to center, scoring Jose
Trevino, the "ghost" runner from second and moved to third on a
ground out. He scored on Rizzo's double to right, but Rizzo then got
thrown out trying the steal third. That put the Yanks up by two runs.
Jarren Duran started the Sox half of the 10th as the runner on
second, and moved to third on Refsnyder's base hit. Jeter Downs
singled to right, scoring Duran as Refsnyder moved up to second base.
Bogaerts next hit a taylor-made doubleplay grounder to thirdbaseman
Josh Donaldson, but he fumbled it briefly and could only get the play
at first. It put Refsnyder on third and Downs on second for Verdugo.
Verdugo went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and Kutter Crawford pitched a
six strikeout game through the first five innings. His only blemish
was the homer to Hicks. The Sox got huge support from Tanner Houck
who held the Yankees scoreless for two innings with the game tied,
sending it into overtime.
