The Sox tie the game in the ninth inning and
walk it off in the tenth to beat the Yankees
August 12, 2022 ...
Garrett Whitlock was stone cold under pressure in the final
two innings, retiring six of the seven New York Yankee batters he
faced. Without his effort, the Red Sox 3-2 come-from-behind win, in
ten innings, would not have been possible.
Xander Bogaerts and Alex Verdugo both worked free passes in the
bottom of the ninth inning, with the Yankees leading 2 to 1. Then
J.D. Martinez drilled a single into center field that scored Bogaerts
with the tying run.
Whitlock then walked Aaron Judge, who had blasted his 46th homer in
the third inning, to start the tenth. He the got Anthony Rizzo to
line out and struck out Josh Donaldson and Gleyber Torres to get out
of the inning.
Then in the Sox half of the tenth inning, with Christian Arroyo
starting as the runner on second, Jaylen Davis moved him over to
third with a ball hit back to the Yankee pitcher, Lou Trivino. Reese
McGuire came to the plate, pinch-hitting for Kevin Plawecki and
reached on a bunt single down the third baseline. Finally a line
drive single down the third base line by Tommy Pham brought home
Arroyo with the game winner.
