Rafael Devers leads the Sox to a 6-run
come-from-behind walk-off win

September 1, 2022 ... Rafael Devers was mired in an extended hitting slump when he came to the plate in the eighth inning against the Texas Rangers. But he was instrumental in the Red Sox comeback rally that resulted in a 9-8 walk-off victory.

Christian Arroyo had given the Sox a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning, with a double that scored Alex Verdugo. But the Rangers scored three runs in the fifth inning to put the Sox behind, 4-2. Verdugo's sixth inning homer cut the Ranger lead to one run.

But the Sox bullpen could not keep it close, giving up two runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth, putting the Sox in a five run hole.

Devers started the rally from a 8 to 3 deficit in the Sox half of the eighth inning, by belting double, to the deepest part of Fenway Park to base of the wall at the 420 ft mark in the centerfield triangle, scoring Xander Bogaerts.  J.D. Martinez drew a walk and Arroyo lined a single to center that scored Devers, making the score 8-5.

An inning later, with the bases loaded, Devers lined a two-run double to left that scored two runners. Kiki Hernandez followed Devers with a base hit that tied the game, bringing up Rob Refsnyder. He lined a ball down the third base line that scored Devers from third with the game winner.
