With the Red Sox honoring the World Champion Boston Celtics at
Fenway, they gave the Champs something to cheer about themselves. The
Sox held a one-run lead over Toronto thanks to Rafael Devers' two-run
blast, 2-1.
But in the seventh inning the Jays rallied to score five times off
WooSox call-up pitcher, Isiah Campbell and took a 6-2 lead. But that
all changed in the eighth inning.
On what should have been an easy pop-up out by Jarren Duran, the Jays
let the ball drop between their shortstop and thirdbaseman. Duran,
who had already had web gem, by making a leaping snag of a line drive
against the center field gate in the fifth inning, ended up sprinting
into second base. He scored moments later when David Hamilton
scorched a line drive into the right field grandstand, making the
score 6-4.
Devers followed that with another hit and was sent to third when
Tyler O'Neill doubled to center. Rob Refsnyder was sent up to pinch
it and was walked intentionally to load the bases and set up a force.
Romy Gonzalez was also called on to pinch hit and he lined the first
pitch he saw into left. Devers scored, O'Neill scored, and the game
was tied at six apiece.
Kenley Jansen came in and put down the Jays in the top of the ninth
before the dramatic bottom ending. The bottom of the ninth started
when Cedanne Rafaela led off by reaching first on a fielding error.
With the Toronto pitcher, Zach Pop, trying to beat the pitch clock,
never came to a full set and was called for a balk. Rafaela happily
jogged down to second baseand that brought up Jarren Duran. He took
Pop's 95 mph sinker on a line, into right center and Rafaela slid
home with the walk-off game winner.
