... September 28, 1948 ... In a typical Brooklyn-Boston baseball game, the newly crowned Braves were defeated by the scrappy Dodgers, 9 to 8, after 13 innings of play at Ebbets Field. The game was the 11th of 20 games between the two teams that was been decided by one run. The Braves have captured eight of these nerve-racking contests. Nelson Potter was primed for the World Series by turning in five innings of scoreless relief pitching. On the negative side, Eddie Stanky, playing second base, proved that he cannot move sufficiently about to be a factor in the World Series. Warren Spahn was hit hard in the five innings he pitched, giving up seven runs on eight hits, with the Dodger right-handed hitters getting him for seven hits, two of which were home runs and a pair of doubles. Clyde Shoun came in to pitch the one batter and that was Jackie Robinson in the 13th inning, who belted his 12th home run into the lower left field stands on a two and two serve, to break up the ballgame with the game-winner walkoff. Mike McCormick opened the 12th with a triple off southpaw preacher Roe. Frank McCormick in a fly ball to left and because Mike failed to slide into the plate, he was easily tagged out by Roy Campanella on gene Hermanski's throw home. Warren Spahn, surprisingly, was distracted by Jackie Robinson on third-base, allowing the Dodgers speedster to steal home in the fifth inning, on Spahn's first pitch to Carl Furillo. The Braves hit the ball hard as Jeff Heath belted his 20th home run and a double. Frank McCormick had his fourth home run of the year into the left-field stands, while Mike McCormick chipped in with a single, a double and a triple. Bob Elliott also at two base hits. Stanky added a vital base hit the four times he was at the plate. It was a single to left that scored Clint Conaster, in his fourth and final appearance of the day, before coming out for Sibbi Sisti in the sixth inning. Pee Wee Reese's ninth home run of the year sent the Dodgers off in the first inning against Spahn. They traveled 350 feet into left field grandstand. |
