SPAHN & SAIN and PRAY FOR RAIN ...
Sain wins his
24th, but Spahn gets KO'd
October 2, 1948 ... The
Braves split a doubleheader at the Polo Grounds with the New York
Giants, as Johnny Sain accounted for his 24th win, aided by Bill
Voiselle, who pitched two innings of scoreless relief in a 2 to 1
victory. Warren Spahn was knocked out of the game for the third
successive time in the opener, losing 8 to 2. Sain chipped in with
a vital RBI, as he singled in the second inning to score Phil Masi, who had
reached with a single, followed by Al Lyons, who also got a base hit. Then in
the fifth inning, after Lyons singled to open off Monte Kennedy, Sain dropped
down a perfect bunt to move him up a base. After Eddie Stanky grounded out, Al
Dark tripled to right to score Lyons, with what proved to be the winning run.
The Giants scored one run off Sain, but had Connie Ryan been more alert in
the third inning, it might not have happened. Buddy Kerr opened the inning with
a double down the third-base line and then pitcher Mel Webb laid down a
sacrifice that Sain jumped on quickly, only to find third-base empty because
Ryan had also come in from third base to get the ball leaving it open. Kerr then
scored on Jack Lohrke's bloop single to center.
In the first game the Braves were able to jump out to a 1 to 0 lead in the
second inning. Bob Elliott led off with a triple off Red Webb and scored on
Clint Conaster's two base hit.
But Spahn was in trouble in the third inning. After walking Kerr to start
off, he gave up two successive singles to Lohrke and Bobby Rhawn that tied up
the game. After striking out Bobby Thomson, both Lohrke and Rhawn stole a base.
Johnny Mize and got an intentional walk to load them up and Pete Milne singled
through second base to score two more and put the Giants up 3 to 1.
Spahn's control problem continued the next inning when he walked Les Layton
to start the inning. Two batters later Lohrke slammed a home run into the
left-field stands, giving the Giants a 5 to 1 advantage.
The Giants added one more run in the sixth inning thanks to shaky defensive
play. Spahn started the trouble himself by walking Kerr and then Webb hit a
ground ball down to shortstop Bobby Sturgeon, who overthrew Earl Torgeson,
letting Kerr get to third. Then Lohrke hit a grounder at Bob Elliott, that he
bobbled, and Kerr scored the unearned run. Two more runs were added the next
inning on three successive base hits and a double by Kerr, making it 8 to 1.
The Braves added a meaningless run in the eighth-inning as ark tripled to
left-center and Marv Rickert singled him in. |
