The Braves win
the season finale
October 3, 1948 ... The
Braves picked up their 91st victory by winning the season finale over
the New York Giants at the Polo Grounds by an 11 to 1 score. Manager
Southworth employed 21 men, with his bullpen crew of Nelson Potter,
Clyde Shoun, bill Voiselle, Bobby Hogue and rookie Johnny Antonelli
dividing up the pitching. Bob Elliott drove in four runs to reach
the 100 RBI circle for the fifth time in his major league career. He had to wait
until's final time at bat, and with a three and two count, he doubled viciously
inside the third-base to score Connie Ryan who had walked. Tommy Holmes, by
going three for three, totaled 190 base hits, to lead the league. Nelson Potter
received credit for the win, his fifth of the year.
Red Barrett was assigned to help Jeff Heath, as he was released from Swedish
Hospital. The two went to Grand Central Station where they joined the rest of
the team for the train trip back to Boston. Upon their return, Heath rolled
through the cheering crowd crowd in his wheelchair, keeping his head down.
Finally a youngster came up to him and said hello. Heath looked up put his arm
on the little boy shoulder and one can see the tears coming down from his eyes. |
