FOOTBALL AT FENWAY
November 23, 1947 ... Boston's Yanks who have been mauled by the Philadelphia Eagles ever since they joined the NFL turned on their tormentors at Fenway Park yesterday. With the score tied at 14-14 with four minutes to play and Philadelphia threatening, the Yanks intercepted a pass and marched 91 yards to a touchdown and a victory. All the Yank touchdowns were provided by Frank Dancewicz, who passed for two and scored the other himself. It was the first the first time in seven meetings that the Yanks had come within 20 points of the Eagles. The interception, one of four by the Yanks, was made by Frank Seno on the Boston 3-yard line who returned it to the nine. The Yanks then covered 91 yards in nine plays to score one of the major upsets of the season. Thanks chiefly to passes from Dancewicz to Seno and Hal Crisler, reached the Philadelphia six yard line. It was third down and five to go. Dancewicz dropped back and looked for Don Currivan, but seeing that he was covered, he ran instead. He circled right end with Seno and Rudy Romboli blocking, and raced to the corner for the touchdown. Dancewicz completed eight of 16 passes for 140 yards and ran for 50 more, turning in the best day of his pro career. The Yanks startled the crowd by grabbing the opening kickoff and going 75 yards in eight plays for a touchdown. Six of the eight were on the ground, but the other two were passes by Dancewicz that ate up the heaviest yardage. The first was a shot to Crisler for 24 yards that carried the ball to the Eagles' 40-yard line. The next saw Dancewicz drop back to midfield and throw a bomb to Don Currivan on the goal line. The Eagles came back with Bosh Pritchard and Steve Van Buren carrying the ball deep into Boston territory. But Joe Sebasteanski intercepted Tommy Thompson at the eight. In the second period the Eagles advanced again, but again Thompson was intercepted. Boston couldn't advance and was forced to punt. Pat McHugh took Red Maley's kick and his Eagle mates opened up a huge hole. McHugh, without a hand touching him raced 69 yards into the Boston end zone, and a 7-7 tie game.
Later, after a Maley punt dropped out of bounds on the Eagle one-yard line and Philly's Joe Muha was forced to punt back, the Yanks took over at the Eagle 29. The Yanks moved it down to the 15. Dancewicz threw three times, but on fourth down, Joe Golding outran the Eagles' Russ Craft to make a pretty 20-yard touchdown catch for a 14-7 half time score. Thompson's arm finally connected in the third period. He chucked one from his own 43 with Neil Armstrong who had to outbattled Joe Golding for a leaping catch at the Boston 10. Van Buren took four carries into the Yank defensive line and finally made it thru from the one. The hat set the stage from Dancewicz and the winning rally. Starting from the Eagle 9-yard line Dancewicz hit Seno for a 30 yard gain to the Eagle 40-yard line. Dancewicz to Crisler made 13 more. Then Seno galloped off right tackle for 14 yards to the 13-yard line. Seno ran twice and Dancewicz ran once setting up the dramatic fourth down winning score. |
