November 30, 1947 ... Frank Dancewicz had already thrown two touchdown passes, but the Washington Redskins, with Sammy Baugh who had completed 14 passes in a row, twice had surged back to capture the lead 24-20 in the fourth period. It was second down on his own 30-yard line, when Dancewicz hit Don Currivan who raced all the way down to the Washington 25-yard line before being hauled down. Dancewicz completed two more passes to gain only one yard. Then he took the ball from center and sped to his right as he would do on an end run, pushed a Redskin lineman aside and pitched to Joe Golding, who ran it down the sideline for the winning touchdown. Baugh had completed 20 of 29 passes for 279 yards, setting a new record for passing yardage in a season with 2438. but it was the passes of Dancewicz that carried the tide. He was nine of 20 for 256 yards with three touchdowns. He started in the first period. With the ball on his own 25-yd line, he let loose with a 60 yard pass to Don Currivan who made it down to the Redskins 16-yd line. Frank Maznicki kicked a 26 yard field goal to give the Yanks a 3-0 lead. In the second period, the Yanks went 48 yards to score on a bomb to Hal Crisler to make it 10-0. Then Baugh came right back and hit Bob Nussbaumer for 55 yards before settling for a field goal. With 30 seconds left in the half, Crisler jumped on a fumble at the Washington 6-yard line, and lateraled to Currivan who took it in for a score. The lateral unfortunately was ruled forward to Boston got the ball at the 11-yard line. Maznicki's field goal made it 13-3 at the half. In the third period with Baugh passing and Jim Castiglia running inside the tackles, Washington came back. Baugh took them 64 yards. He pitched to Nussbaumer, who outleaped Golding and Joe Sebasteanski for a 27 yard gain to the Boston 40-yard line. Nussbaumer took it for another 16 yards and a pass interference penalty put the ball at the Yanks one yard line where Castiglia took it in. A 64 yard drive later gave Washington the lead. Baugh pitched to Eddie Saenz for a 55 yard run down to the Yanks 7-yd line. Castiglia took it in once more to give Washington the lead. Johnny Poto took the kickoff for Boston up to his 25-yard line. On third down Dancewicz threw downfield and hit Don Currivan, who outraced Poilon 50 yards to give the Yanks the lead once again. Baugh completed eight straight passes to start the fourth period and went 45 yards to score and retake the lead. After that it was Dancewicz who staged the last comeback that ended the game. |
