FOOTBALL AT FENWAY
George Boston recovers a fumble to give
B.U. a 20-14 win over Colgate

November 22, 1947 ... Boston University cashed in on a big break to take to dispel Colgate in the season finale.  It was an exciting spectacle to finish the year with 30 school band giving the afternoon some oomph in the pre-game and halftime festivities.  The Terriers outplayed Colgate and were on the verge of availing themselves nothing to show for it, when only eight minutes from the end of the game, Colgate was on the very lip of their own goal line.  With fourth down, Colgate fullback Frank Muehlheuser dropped back deep in his end zone to punt.  The snap was, bad.  Muehlheuser couldn't handle it and dropped the ball, allowing the charging Terriers to swarm all over it, with George Boston recovering the ball for a touchdown.  While the play was a gift, it was a game B.U. deserved to win, as they perforated the Colgate defense for 16 first downs with a fine running attack.

B.U. took away a 7-0 lead at the end of the first period, as George Boston partially blocked a Muehlheuser kick to set up the first score.  The Terriers had Colgate on the ropes up through the middle of the second period, when Jennings Marburger split the B.U. right tackle and end to sprint to the end zone for a score.  Colgate then got the ball and traveled 80 yards in six plays to put up another score before the end of the half.  In the third period B.U. went on the offensive and stopped themselves when they mixed up a handoff between John Toner to Pete Sarno, giving Colgate the ball back.  The Terriers made up for it with an eight play scoring drive after Colgate's punt.  All this set up the final act.  B.U. marched 55 yards in pursuit of the clinching score, only to fumble at Colgate's 5-yd line.  After an unsuccessful three downs, the botched snap from center, gave the Terriers the game.
