Indians start fast, Red Sox finish faster
July 7, 1916 ...
In a bitter contest full of sensational plays, the Red Sox beat the Indians at Fenway by a 3 to 1 score. The visitors jumped on Babe Ruth in the first inning, scoring their only run on three sharp singles by Jack Graney, Tris Speaker and Chick Gandil.
After that Babe pitched a fine game until Carl Mays came in to relieve him in the eighth.
For six innings the run looked like a mountain to the Red Sox, who were utterly unable to gauge the delivery of Fred Beebe, who has been resurrected by Cleveland and is showing the youngsters something. The Sox stuck to the task like true champions and
tied the score in the seventh inning and scored the winning run in the eighth, with Tilly Walker getting the satisfaction of sending Jack Barry home with a line single to center.
As usual, all eyes were on Tris Speaker and he was there all the time with his fielding and got in one timely hit during three at bats, stealing second base also. |
