Bill Lee beats the Angels, 5 to 2

Rico Petrocelli and Rick Burleson hit two-run singles to back
the seven hit pitching of Bill Lee, as the Sox beat the Angels, 5 to
2, their seventh win in eight games.
Lee, with three
straight wins, helped himself in the second inning. Jerry Remy
doubled with one out, and Lee picked him off first, his fifth pickoff
of the year.
Jim Rice lined his fifth home run of the year off Bill Singer in the
fourth inning, to give the Sox a 1-0 lead. The Sox second run in the
sixth inning, came when Singer began by walking Bernie Carbo.
Burleson forced him at second base and he was moved along by Carl
Yastrzemski's base hit. Fred Lynn moved both runners up a base
and Dick Williams walked Jim Rice to get to Rico Petrocelli. Rico,
who was batting only .162, lined two-out-bases-loaded single to score
them both.
Down 3-0, the Angels broke through on Lee in the sixth inning.
Tommy Harper led off with an infield hit that died 10 feet behind
second base, and Winston Llenas walked. Dave Chalk pushed one run
across with a single to center. Bruce Bochte tried to move the
runners up with a bunt, but was safe when nobody was covering first
base and the bases were loaded. Jerry Remy put the Angels down only a
run, 3-2, when he grounded into a doubleplay.
The Sox made the score 5 to 2 in the ninth inning. Dwight Evans
started off with a single to right. With two outs, Bernie Carbo
doubled down the left field line and Burleson knocked both the
baserunners in, with a single to left.
Lee forced 18 ground ball outs and five of the Angels' seven hits
were grounders through the infield. Lee caught a break in the eighth
inning when Tommy Harper was on second and broke for third base on a
grounder to Rico, who stabbed the grounder easily and tagged him out.
Dwight Evans had three hits in the game and Rick Burleson knocked out
two. |
