Rollie Fingers beats the Sox in
long relief
May 12, 1975
...
What looked like an easy win for Reggie Cleveland,
turned into a bombing, as the A's scored four runs in the seventh
inning, to come back and beat the Sox.
For 6 1/3 innings
Rollie Fingers kept the Sox in check with hitless ball until the
ninth inning. The only hit off him was a two out single, in the ninth
by Dwight Evans, with the A's coming back and winning 5 to 3.
Paul Lindblad came in and got Tony Conigliaro to pop out with runners
on first and third, to complete the game.
The Sox just had three baserunners off Fingers, Yaz on a walk in the
sixth, Fred Lynn on a walk and Evans getting the base hit in the
ninth.
The A's then put together four runs for Fingers, who had come in to
relieve starter, Dave Hamilton in the 3rd inning. Hamilton had given
up three runs to the Sox. In the second inning Rico Petrocelli
slammed his first home run of the year. Evans followed with a triple
and scored on a ground out by Bob Montgomery. In the third inning
Hamilton gave up a base hit to Juan Beniquez, who stole second and
scored on Yaz's single to right. That brought in Fingers, who worked
longer than in any game over two years.
In the third inning the A's got to Cleveland, who hung a pitch to
Bert Campaneris, who lined the ball thru the gap in right center for
a triple. Reggie Jackson that hit a long fly ball to left center that
Beniquez chased down. On the chase, however, Jim Rice pulled his
groin and had to be replaced by Fred Lynn.
Down 3 to 1, the A's put together four runs in the seventh, to take
the lead and reward Fingers with a win for his long relief. The
game-winning hit was by Jim Holt, whose two-run single that chased
Gene Tenace and Claudell Washington home with the tying and winning
runs. It began with a double by Billy Williams and a double by Tenace.
Diego Segui came in and gave up a base hit to Washington. |
