“DIARY OF A WINNER”

BILLY WILLIAMS

THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
Billy Williams' homer sinks the Sox

May 13, 1975 ... Home runs by Joe Rudi and Billy Williams enabled the A's to turn back the Sox for the second night in a row, 9 to 5. Rudi's fourth home run of the season in the fifth inning, broke a 4-4 tie and Williams' homer added three runs in the seventh inning.

A rally was stopped in the fifth inning by Ken Holtzman, who struck out Carl Yastrzemski. Down 4-0, Bernie Carbo singled and was forced at second base by Dwight Evans. Doug Griffin singled and A's starter, Glen Abbott, walked Tim Blackwell to load the bases. Abbott then walked Rick Miller to bring in Evans and Rick Burleson lined a double to clear the bases and tie the game.

In the seventh inning Billy North led off with a base hit off Rick Wise. Rogelio Moret came in to replace Wise and intentionally walked Rudi to set up the force, but then Billy Williams lined a home run to put the A's ahead, 8 to 4. Reggie Jackson's sacrifice fly in the eighth inning accounted for the A's ninth run.
