Steve Busby blanks the Sox
May 15, 1975
...
Luis Tiant again got no help and Steve
Busby hurled a four-hitter for his second consecutive shutout at
Fenway Park, and the Kansas City Royals took advantage of Sox
fielding lapses in a 3 to 0 victory.
The only hits off Busby were singles by Bernie Carbo with two outs in
the third inning, Rico Petrocelli with two away in the fourth, and
Rick Burleson and Carl Yastrzemski to start the ninth inning. Busby
walked two, struck out five and retired 13 batters in a row between
the fourth and eighth innings. Jim Rice struck out four times.
Busby received all the help he needed when the Royals scored an
unearned run in the sixth inning off Tiant, who hasn't been given a
run of support, in his last two starts. With two outs, Hal McRae was
hit by a pitch after his foul pop dropped between Bob Montgomery and
Yaz in a mixup. McRae attempted to steal second and appeared to be
out by plenty, but Burleson dropped Monty's throw while applying the
tag and was charged with an error. After John Mayberry walked, Harmon
Killebrew blooped a single to shallow right-center that scored McRae.
In the seventh inning. the Royals wrapped up the game with two more
runs. Al Cowens doubled to left center and Fred Patek bunted the ball
toward third base. Petrocelli stayed back thinking Tiant was getting
the ball, and by the time he got to it and threw to first, Patek was
safe and Cowens was on third. Patek stole second on a delay and
scored on Vada Pinson's base hit.
Rick Burleson's hard smash off Busby's foot went into center for a
base hit in the ninth inning. Yaz singled to right and Burleson made
it over to third. But Fred Lynn bounced easily back to Busby who
forced Yaz at second and Rice went down for the fourth time.
Petrocelli popped to left and the game ended. |
