AFTER HITTING HIS TRIPLE |
THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
Cecil Cooper leads the Sox past the Royals
July 17, 1975 ...
Cecil Cooper had a chance to hit for the "cycle" when
he stepped to the plate in the seventh inning against the Royals. He
had hit a home run, a triple, and a double already. He banged a
grounder toward short and Rodney Scott scooped it up and threw him
out. And so he missed his chance, but raised his average up to .367,
having driven in four runs, leading the Sox past the Royals, 6 to 3.
Cooper blasted a ball into the centerfield bleachers in the second
inning, to give the Sox a 1-0 lead. After doubling in the fourth, he
smacked a ball off the centerfield wall in the fifth with the bases
loaded.
Luis Tiant picked up his 13th win and handled Kansas City with ease
though six innings. until John Mayberry slugged his 18th homer of the
year into the right field corner. Tiant gave up five hits.
After Cooper's fourth inning double, Carlton Fisk drove him in with
the Sox' second run off Al Fitzmorris, the KC starter. Rick Burleson
added a home run in the fifth inning when the Sox score four more
runs. Bernie Carbo and Denny Doyle followed him with base hits and
Fitzmorris left the game in favor of Paul Splitorff. Rice was walked
to fill the bases for the force play, but Cooper then tripled home
everyone to put the Sox way out in front, 6-0.
The Royals got on the board with Mayberry's homer in the seventh and
added another when Cookie Rojas knocked in two runners. Rico
Petrocelli had a pair of hits, including a triple in the bottom of
the seventh, that scored Rice and Fisk to put the Sox up, 6-3 and
give them their 8th straight win.
Carl Yastrzemski received a standing ovation for his All Star Game
performance when he stepped to the plate for his first at bat. He
went hitless in this game however. |
