Jim Rice
launches a ball out of Fenway
July 18, 1975 ...
The Sox slammed Jim Busby, the Royals starter, as
often as they could, beating the Royals down, 9 to 3, for their ninth
straight win. When Jim Rice faced him in the third inning, Busby
threw him a low fastball, which was launched toward the centerfield
bleachers. The fans anticipated scrambling after the ball, but they
never got a chance. It sailed over their heads, over the wall, and
was last seen rolling down the end of Lansdowne Street toward Ipswich
Street.
In 1937, Hank Greenburg drilled a homer over the bleacher wall about
20 feet to the right of the flag pole. Jimmie Foxx did the same thing
the next year. Bill Skowron launched one in 1957, Carl Yastrzemski in
1970 and Bobby Mitchell in 1973.
Bill Lee retired 15 batters on ground balls with the wind blowing
out. He gave up six hits and Hal McRae knocked out three of them and
Harmon Killebrew hit two.
The Sox scored two runs in the first inning on Bernie Carbo's single
and Yaz's homer to right. They added three more in the second on a
single by Carlton Fisk, an error by George Brett and back-to-back
doubles by Carbo and Denny Doyle.
Rice's homer came in the third inning, while Burleson and Doyle
doubled for a run in the fourth. Rice singled, Juan Beniquez doubled
and Fisk's sacrifice fly accounted for their eighth run in the fifth.
Dwight Evans doubled in the eighth and scored on an error by
shortstop, Frank White.
Killebrew's double scored McRae with the Royals first run in the
fourth, and his ninth inning homer again scored McRae for their three
runs. |
