A SEASON TO REMEMBER

Denny Doyle's three run homer climaxed a six-run sixth
inning that pushed the Sox to their 10th straight win, 8-0 over the
Rangers in Texas. The Sox banged out 10 hits and Rick Wise went the
distance, scattering seven hits for his 12th win of the year and
first shutout.
The Sox grabbed a 1-0 lead by virtue of Cecil Cooper's homer in the
second inning. Wise pitched himself out of a first inning jam after
giving up a leadoff single and a bunt base hit. He then struck out
Jeff Burroughs and Mike Cubbage to end the threat.
Then in the sixth inning, Fred Lynn led off with a triple down the
right field line and scored when Burroughs bobbled the ball. One out
later Cecil Cooper tapped back to the pitcher, Bill Hands, who threw
wide to first base. Then Hands threw a wild pitch, that allowed
Cooper to get to second. Lenny Randle threw Carlton Fisk's grounder
past first base for the Rangers' third error of the inning. Rick
Burleson's double to right scored both runners. Jim Umbarger replaced
Hands and put Dwight Evans on first intentionally, to set up a force
play. Stan Thomas took over and Doyle greeted him with a shot into
the right field bleachers that put the Sox up 7-0.
The final Sox run came in the ninth inning. Carl Yastrzemski reached
second when Mike Cubbage threw the ball away for the fifth Ranger
error of the game. Jim Rice singled to center scored him with the
eighth Red Sox run.
The Sox are hitting .339 and slugging .592 during the streak and have
a 6 1/2 game lead over Milwaukee. Cooper has hit over .400 in his
last 17 games and over .600 in slugging percentage. Lynn leads the
league with a .608 slg pct. |
