The Texas Rangers snapped the Sox 10-game winning streak in
the first half of a doubleheader, 10 to 5, but the Sox bounced back
and took a close 3 to 2 win in game number two, behind the six-hit
pitching of Reggie Cleveland and Jim Willoughby.
The Sox grabbed the lead in the second inning of the second game, on
Jim Rice's single and Cecil Cooper's triple off Steve Hargan.
They added a second run on a base hit, a walk and a groundout in the
fifth inning. Rick Burleson singled a high hopper over the mound to
bring home Cooper after he doubled, in the seventh inning for the
difference.
Cleveland stopped the Rangers on three hits thru the six innings he
worked, to pick up his seventh win. But in the seventh inning, with a
3-0 lead he gave up a two-run homer to Toby Harrah, with Jim Spencer
on board. Willoughby finished the inning and the game for his third
save.
In the first game Lenny Randle and Tom Grieve each drove in three
runs to lead the Rangers. Rogelio Moret. lasted only 2 2/3 innings
and gave up five runs. The Rangers stole a club record, six bases in
the game off Carlton Fisk. Fred Lynn's 17th homer got the Sox back to
within three runs in the seventh inning, but Diego Segui got tagged
for two more runs in the bottom of the inning. |
