Cooper's homer nips the Birds in
the 10th
September 3,
1975 ...
Cecil Cooper blasted his 13th homer to start off the 10th
inning, eventually winning the game for the Sox, 3 to 2 over the
second place Orioles in Baltimore.
Rick Wise went all the way for the Sox, posting his 18th win (the
most he has ever won in his major league career). It was his 11th win
in his last 13 decisions. Palmer was brilliant in defeat, holding the
Sox scoreless for 4 2/3 innings, finishing with a seven-hitter and
ten strikeouts.
The Sox scored first in the second inning, when Palmer had a bout of
wildness, and issued four consecutive free passes to Dwight Evans,
Rick Burleson, Rico Petrocelli and finally to Cooper that pushed
across Evans. After the second, Palmer didn't allow a baserunner
until the seventh inning.
Lee May's line drive home run over the center field fence, with Tommy
Davis onboard, put the O's up 2 to 1.
Petrocelli, playing for the first time since suffering inner ear
problems two weeks ago, pulled the Sox into a 2-2 tie in the seventh
inning. After Evans and Burleson touched Palmer for base hits,
Petrocelli's single to center scored Evans. |
