THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
The Sox sweep the Orioles
September 4,
1975 ...
The Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 3 to 1 and took a
commanding eight game lead in the AL East. Dick Pole, just coming off
the disabled list for taking a line drive to the face on June 30th,
combined with Dick Drago to hurl a five-hitter.
Pole was a late replacement for Luis Tiant, who was experiencing
muscle spasms in his back. He allowed just two hits in the first five
innings.
The Sox scored two runs in the opening inning, one on a weird play at
the plate which confused the umpires. The Sox loaded the bases with
one out off Mike Torrez, on a single by Cecil Cooper, a double by
Carl Yastrzemski and a walk to Fred Lynn.
Jim Rice then grounded to Brooks Robinson, who stepped on third to
force Yaz, as Cooper scored. Robinson then made a wild throw past Lee
May at first. May retrieved the ball and spun to throw to home to get
Yaz, who had already been put out by Brooks, but wasn't sure that
Robinson had tagged the bag safely, so was sprinting homeward. The
ball went past catcher Dave Duncan and umpire Larry Barnett signaled
that Yaz was safe. Meanwhile Lynn circled the bases on the double
error and slid home for the second run.
The Orioles got one of the runs back in the fifth inning on a walk
and two singles that loaded the bases. Bobby Grich scored one of the
runners with a sacrifice fly to right.
The Sox scored an insurance run in the ninth inning. Carlton Fisk led
off the inning with a triple and scored on a wild pitch by Torrez for
the third run. |
