THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
The Sox top the Tigers and creep
closer
September 19,
1975 ...
The Red Sox held on thru two rain delays to beat the Tigers 7
to 5 in Detroit. The Sox chased Ray Bare in the first inning with
four runs, but Bill Lee got hammered for three runs in the bottom of
the first.
With the clutch hitting of Rico Petrocelli and a crucial throw by Dwight Evans,
the Sox came on to win. Jim Rice and Carlton Fisk led the way
with three hits each. Fisk, since returning to the Sox lineup has hit
.328 with 50 RBIs in only 238 at bats.
The Sox scored right out of the gate in the first inning. Cecil
Cooper, Denny Doyle and Carl Yastrzemski got three consecutive hits.
Bare then walked Fred Lynn to load the bases. Rice and Fisk continued
with two more hits and the Sox had a four run lead.
But Lee gave up three consecutive singles in the bottom of the first
and a two-run double to Bill Freehan, for three runs. Then Ben
Oglivie slammed a homer in the second inning to end Lee's night with
the game tied at 4-4.
In the fourth inning the Tigers got two runners on when Rice ended up
doing a belly flop in the mud while chasing a bloop hit. After a 45
minute rain delay, with runners on second and third, play was resumed
and Dick Pole walked Willie Horton intentionally to set up a
force. Aurelio flied to deep right and Dwight Evans cut down Gary
Sutherland at the plate after he tagged on the fly. That's 14 assists
and eight double plays for Dewey.
Lerrin Legrow shut down the Sox until the fifth inning when they went
back up by two runs 6-4. Rice and Fisk singled and Petrocelli knocked
them both in off Ed Glynn. In the seventh Steve Grilli gave up a hit
to Fisk, walked Petrocelli and a sacrifice fly to Rick Burleson
making it 7-4.
Dick Pole worked 5 1/3 hard innings in relief of Lee, getting out of
numerous jams, giving up nine hits and four walks. The Tigers finally
got to him for a run in the eighth before Jim
Burton came in to get one man and Dick Drago shut the door.
Fred Lynn became the first American Leaguer to have scored 100 runs
and knocked in 100 RBIs since Yaz did it in 1970. |
