THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
The Sox lose Jim Rice with a broken hand

September 21, 1975 ... Jim Rice was hit by a pitch from Vern Ruhle in the second inning of the Sox 6-5 victory over the Tigers in Detroit. He batted two more times before being taken to Ford Hospital for x-rays. They showed that he had a fractured fourth metacarpal bone and had his hand put in a cast.

In the game however, Denny Doyle ripped a bases-loaded double in the ninth inning to give the Sox a comeback win. Ron LeFlore had singled home Aurelio Rodriguez in the eighth inning with the go-ahead run.

Rogelio Moret had given up a double and a run-scoring single to Gary Sutherland to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. But in the second inning the Sox took a 2-1 lead. After Rice was hit by Ruhle's pitch, Fisk singled and Bernie Carbo drew a free pass to load the bases. Rico Petrocelli's sacrifice fly to center scored Rice to tie the game. Burleson's infield hit re-loaded the bases and Fisk scored on Cecil Cooper's ground ball to firstbaseman Dan Meyer.

Moret and reliever Ed Glynn both pitched scoreless ball until the seventh inning. Glynn lost his control and walked Carbo, wild pitched him to second, and gave up a run-scoring single to Rico Petrocelli, and put the Sox up 3-1.

But the Tigers got to Moret in their half of the seventh. Veryzer walked and Moret went 3-1 on Gates Brown. Dick Drago was brought in but walked Brown. After two ground outs, Ben Oglivie and Willie Horton singled back-to-back, scoring three runs and giving Detroit a 4 to 3 lead.

A walk to Doyle, a base hit by Yaz, and a sacrifice fly to deep right by Fred Lynn, tied the game in the eighth. LeFlore put the Tigers back on top in the bottom of the eighth. After Drago had given up two base hits, LeFlore lined another hit and the Tigers led again, 5-4.

So came the ninth inning and Gene Pentz was now pitching for the Tigers. He walked Rick Miller, and the Gary Sutherland let Petrocelli's pop fly drop in over his head. Burleson sacrificed the runners up and Pentz put Cooper on intentionally to load the bases. Doyle brought Miller and Rico home with his double off the first base bag and the Sox were ahead 6-5. Drago pitched a 1-2-3 ninth and picked up the win.
