Denny Doyle sends the Sox past
NY
September 22,
1975 ...
Denny Doyle's two-run bad hop single, his third hit of
the game, finished a three-run Sox rally in the sixth inning, that
carried them past the Yankees, 6 to 4.
Yankee rookie Ron Guidry made his first major league start, and was
nursing a 2-1 lead after Thurman Munson's two-run homer in the first
inning.
Fred Lynn's sacrifice fly accounted for the Sox only run, in the
second inning before they rallied for three runs in the sixth. Deron
Johnson, who was acquired from the White Sox following Jim Rice's
injury, began with a base hit. He went to third on Rico Petrocelli's
single off the diving Graig Nettles' glove and came home on Lynn's
double into the left field corner to tie the game up at 2-2.
Petrocelli was out trying to score on Rick Burleson's ground ball.
Doyle followed with the game-winning hit off Tippy Martinez. It took
a funny bounce over firstbaseman, Chris Chambliss' head into right
field and the score was 4-2.
In the eighth inning after Lynn singled off Sparky Lyle and moved to
second on a ground out, Doyle got another RBI hit, scoring Lynn with
the Sox fifth run. Deron Johnson knocked in Carl Yastrzemski in the
ninth inning for the Sox final run.
Rick Wise handcuffed the Yankees on five hits for his 19th win. Bill
Lee relieved him in the eighth when the Yanks scored a run on Bobby
Bonds' force out. Dwight Evans slid into the stands to catch Munson's
foul pop up, to end the inning.
Rick Dempsey's RBI grounder accounted for the fourth and final New
York run in the ninth inning, when Yaz's foot was off the first base
bag. Dick Drago struck out Bonds on three straight pitches with two
men on to end the game.
Lynn continued his assault on the record book. With his three hits
and a sacrifice fly, he broke the American League rookie record with
46 doubles. He leads the league with 102 runs and 104 RBIs. |
