THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
The Sox take two and move in closer
September 26,
1975 ...
Luis Tiant posted his 18th win with a four-hitter
and defeated the Cleveland Indians by a 4 to 0 score in the first
game of a doubleheader. Reggie Cleveland gave up five hits in a
second 4 to 0 shutout of the Indians in the nitecap.
After being rained out for three days, the Sox got back into action
with Tiant facing Dennis Eckersley on a foggy night. The Sox took a
quick 2-0 lead in the first inning on two walks, Fred Lynn's
sacrifice fly, and a line double off the wall from Carlton Fisk.
Cecil Cooper made the score 3 to 0 in the fourth inning when he lined
his 14th homer just inside the Pesky Pole, then Cooper knocked in
Fisk after he had doubled for the fourth Sox run in the eighth
inning.
Tiant struck out four and walked one, in putting together his second
shutout of the year and 37th of his career. The fog was so thick that
Oscar Gamble lost a towering drive from Fisk that fell in for a
triple in the sixth inning. Fisk battered the Indians pitchers for
two doubles and a triple, hitting in his 15th straight game.
Reggie Cleveland won his fourth straight in the next game and his 9th
in the last 12. He allowed only one man to reach third base. Dwight
Evans provided the only power in the two games with a home run in the
second game that wound up on the Mass Pike.
A single by Fisk, a walk to Deron Johnson, Rico Petrocelli's single
and Bob Montgomery's sacrifice fly, gave the Sox a run in the fourth
inning. In the eighth, Doyle doubled to right, Juan Beniquez hit
another double and Evans slammed his homer.
The last two Sox pitchers to throw back-to-back shutouts at Fenway,
were Bob Porterfield and Tom Brewer in 1956. |
