THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
The Red
Sox win the AL East title
September 27,
1975 ...
The AL East championship ended, not with heroics, as
Rick Waits took care of that, beating the Sox 5 to 2, but with
mathematics. The Yankees swept a doubleheader from the Orioles and
the Sox backed into the title.
It was a bittersweet day for Sox losing pitcher, Rick Wise. He gave
up a run in the second inning, when he caught his cleat on a
doubleplay throw, depositing the ball in left center. He gave up
another run in the third inning when Boog Powell doubled into the
left field corner and the throw to home to get Rick Manning out at
the plate, was an easy out when the replays were shown. But home
plate umpire Don Denkinger thought otherwise.
The Sox tied the game in the fourth inning on Deron Johnson's two-run
homer, but then Frank Duffy's and John Lowenstein's singles, followed
by a ground out, made the score 3-2.
In the eighth inning Powell sent a ball over Dwight Evans' head for
his 27th homer, then Bill Lee came in and his first pitch was sent
screaming into the stands by Charlie Spikes for the 5 to 2 final
score. |
